UPDATE!! VOC regulations now in full effect year round for
most Northeastern states

As of January 1, 2012 the new VOC regulations will now remain in effect year round for the following states: Maine, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, the District of Columbia and Rhode Island. Vermont and New Hampshire are still considering their approach to VOC regulation while Massachusetts has issued draft regulations.

The language within the regulations varies by state but indicates that manufacturers will not be able to sell or ship noncompliant products to these states. In response, roofing manufacturers such as Carlisle SynTec and Firestone Building Products have introduced many low-VOC alternatives to standard bonding adhesives and primers.

For much of 2011 raw materials used for black and white EPDM membrane, flashings, and tapes has been in short supply. This tight supply is expected to continue through this roofing season and the outlook for next year is not looking much better.

The newest announcement from the major roofing material manufacturers states there will be a 6-8% price increase on EPDM membranes, tapes and flashings effective November 1, 2011.
